| nor |
dc.description.abstract | This master thesis is a history of ideas 'reveal' project to show how John Nome (1904-1980), professor of ethics and philosophy of religion at the MF Norwegian School of Theology, worked as a cultural broker and method developer during the period 1952-1970. I have used a sample of his texts to show how he turned to the general society to clarify the foundation of man's world orientation. Nome was thus a theologian, philosopher, historian, sociologist and cultural philosopher in one. The issues he deals with in these texts include humanistic versus Christian spirituality, Ingmar Bergman's films, professional ethics, Marxism, Sartre, Kierkegaard, ethics and post wartime challenges. Through a wide range of contemporary issues Nome shows his philosophical, theological and ethical position, while he also develops his "axiom-critical" method. I think he developed this method as part of a larger project to show that Christian faith was still fully viable in the modern world. The thesis also highlights the social context in Norway between 1950-1970, which I think brought forth Nome's perspective and methodology, such as the post war period, positivism criticism and the end of the faith in progress. I also reflect on Nome’s role at the MF Norwegian School of Theology and how well it reflects the cultural-open attitude that was characteristic of him. Nome put special emphasis on the individual's importance, the importance of the irrational (that which cannot be deduced rationally, the unconscious) in one’s world view, and the importance of Christian faith in modern time. Nome had a revelation-based point of departure for his life-orientation, which becomes apparent in his overall perspective and method. | eng |
