| nor |
dc.description.abstract | In today's Guatemala and the southern parts of Mexico, right in the deep, moist and warm jungle, archaeologists and adventurers began over 150 years ago to discover the vast monumental and architectural buildings. As the interest and knowledge brought forward, discovered ever new signs of a widespread and residential buildings in this area. Especially fascinating was the remains of magnificent temples. These were seen as impressive by two main reasons: (1) the establishment of the buildings in an area without access to metals and knowledge of metallurgy, (2) and as an exception to most cultures of monumental buildings, in that this was in a lowland covered by jungle. This distinguishes the Mayacivilization from theories that various forms of governance are designed according to their climatic and geological framework. Historical research has at times been characterized by a historical and geographical determinism.
The field of research about the emergence of Mayacivilization has been dominated by archaeologists and anthropologists. Historians have generally been absent in the historical representations
The thesis has therefore tried to analyze the theoretical direction of the presentations of the emergence of the civilization. To see how the historiographical developments have been, and how might historians can contribute to the field. | eng |
