The Bajrang Dal: The Soldiers of Hindutva

Abstract

Denne oppgaven er en detaljert presentasjon av historien til den hindunasjonalistiske organisasjonen Bajrang Dal, og plasserer organisasjonen innen en større kontekst i den hindunasjonalistiske bevegelsen i India kalt Sangh Parivar. Et viktig aspekt er å klargjøre Bajrang Dals rolle i denne omfattende bevegelsen. Dette blir oppnådd ved å se på opprinnelsen til Bajrang Dal i 1984, da de ble stiftet som Vishwa Hindu Parishads (VHP) ungdomsfløy, og skissere utviklingen av organisasjonen inntil nylig. This thesis is an attempt to present a detailed account of the history of the Hindu nationalist youth organization the Bajrang Dal, and to place the organization in the larger context of the Hindu nationalist movement in India (the Sangh Parivar). An important aspect is to establish clarity on the role of the Bajrang Dal in this movement. This is achieved by looking at the origins of the organization in 1984, as the youth wing of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), and outlining its development until recently. I focus on the Bajrang Dal and their close relations to the VHP, and explain why the VHP maintain their youth wing today. It is also achieved by looking at the role of the Bajrang Dal during the violence in Gujarat in 2002, as well as the organization's role in Gujarat before and after the violence. I shed light on the Bajrang Dal's ideology and agenda, their recruitment and training camps, and the different aspects of their daily activities. The background of the organization's members and the reasons why they join the Bajrang Dal is a central discussion. I argue that the youth of the Bajrang Dal come from a variety of backgrounds, and the reasons why they join ranges from opportunism to ideological conviction.
