Abstract

Objectives. The aim of the literature search was to find out the frequency of infections and antibiotics prescription in nursing homes in Europe with main focus on Norway, and whether they follow the national guidelines? Methods I did several literature searches. I have included 19 articles and a Cochrane review in my project task Results Norway: Prevalence infection 5-10% antibiotic use. 3.4% -4.5% in 1998. 6.0% -6.6% in 2006-2007. Sweden: Prevalence of antibiotic use decreased from 5.3% in 2004 to 4.2% in 2008. Finland: Prevalence of antibiotic use decreased from 19.9% in 2005 to 15.4% in 2008. Italy: High infeksjonprevalens (25.5%) and high antibiotic use prevalence (32%). Europe: Prevalence of antibiotic use from 5 to 6.5%, large variation between countries. Previous studies also show large variations in antibiotic use in between nursing homes in Norway. Guidelines are followed in almost 80% of cases in Norway, and Norway has little resistance and great use of narrow-spectrum agents. Frequently use of Methylamine as prophylaxis, but little poor evades for actual effect. Conclusions Resistance rate is relatively stable and national guidelines compliance is good in Norway. Sweden has had decrees in antibiotic use. It is important to still focus on antibiotic use, diagnostics criteria. National guidelines are needed in more countries in Europe and an optimisation of antibiotic use so that we can prevent resistens and side effects.
