| nor |
dc.description.abstract | Norwegian films keep reaching new records of admissions and market shares. Investigating these figures, we find that some films achieve far more admissions than the average - films which tell stories that are embraced by the broader Norwegian audience. Stories that engage, entertain and put real life on hold. Stories which make the audience forget it is in fact a story. Viewers forget that the way the story is told is in fact what determines their very experience of the story.
In this thesis, I ask what characterizes the stories that are so praised by the Norwegian audience. Through an analysis of the narrative itself, the comprehension of the narrative and the emotional tone in nine Norwegian cinema successes, I highlight different aspects of this question, together with a thourough discussion of its responses. When examining various aspects of the narrative and the relation between the audience and the fiction, I combine David Bordwell’s cognitive film theory and Torben Grodal’s theory of emotional response.
This study finds that eight out of the nine films analysed encompass all the factors inherent in a high narrative comprehension, as well as the most important factors in Classical Hollywood Cinema. I find that the same eight films contain the ideal components for an enactive-projective transaction between the audience and the fiction – when watching these films, the viewers experience for themselves the protagonists' desires, aversions, goals, dreams and actions. This study concludes that despite the films' different story lines, protagonists and relations between the syuzhet and the fabula, they all find themselves within the same paradigm. | eng |
