Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to highlight how editors and editorial staff members value source ethics, focusing on point 3.3 of the Code of Ethics of the Norwegian Press (Vær varsom-poster): “Good press conduct requires clarification of the terms on which an interview is being carried out. This also pertains to adjacent research”. My take is that point 3.3 of the Code of Ethics has a vague and diffuse formulation which allows journalists to interpret it as they like. I wanted to find out what point 3.3 really says and how journalists relate to it. The point of reference is the theoretical perspectives that exist on the subject, with the main focus on the Vær varsom-committee’s definition of this paragraph in the preparatory work for the revision of the Code of Ethics of the Norwegian Press in 1994, when paragraph 3.3 got the form it has today. Through a quantitative survey of all incriminating PFU-statements referring to the Code of Ethics point 3.3, research interviews of qualified professionals and journalists, as well as qualitative content analysis of a selection of PFU statements, I revealed that there occurs uncertainities about the meaning of paragraph 3.3’s content, and that the interpretations involves a number of elements that extends beyond the definition made by the Vær-varsom-committee in the preparatory documents. I have in this thesis attempted to identify, understand and explain these elements, as daily concerns all journalists at work.
