Abstract
Summary
The main purpose of this master thesis is to investigate to what extent mobile content services has succeeded as a new form of media. Mobile content services are different types of entertainment and information services, delivered to or utilized by mobile phones via public telecommunication networks.
The thesis investigates, in a consumer perspective, mobile content services with particular emphasis on entertainment services targeted at children and young people. The key players within mobile content services are telecommunications operators, content providers, consumer organizations and, last but not least, consumers themselves which are the end users of the services. Analytically, I have placed special emphasis on the qualitative document analysis of selected consumer complaints on mobile content services, on the basis of a quantitative pre-analysis of all consumer complaints from beginning to end. The analysis shows that mobile content services have largely succeeded as a new form of media. Furthermore, I conclude that the consumer’s expectations towards mobile content services have been somewhat unrealistic and naive, while the mobile content service industry has been characterized by cynically exploiting loopholes in the consumer organizations’ guidelines in order to advertise and sell its products to children and young people.
