Barriers preventing Vanuatu students from entering higher education

Abstract

Higher education enrollment in Vanatu does not reflect the number of senior secondary graduates in the country. There are more secondary graduates than those entering higher education. This study investigates the barriers preventing students from enrolling in higher education.

The study enploys a qualitative methodology, where interviews are conducted to collect the information required for the completion of this dissertation. Literature is used to guide the study, identifying the barriers that most countires also face and the initiatives taken to reduce these barriers.

From the findings, there are several factors that contribute to the low enrollment in higher education. However, finance has become a major issue, as reported by the respondents, and interfering politicians also delay the development of the education system of the country.

There is supposedly more that can be done to address the education system in the country. The education system in Vanatu is detoriorating in many ways. The barriers can be reduced if more is done at the policy level, which obstruct proposals aimed at enhancing the system, despite the government changes. There will be great development if there is less interference from the politicians, and educationists are allowed to carry their job effectively.
