Abstract
Background: Fine needle aspiration cytology is an established technique used to diagnose masses in the head and neck region. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical value of fine needle aspiration cytology in the head and neck region.
Methods: A series of published articles were searched in PubMed, and thereafter studied.
Results: Based on the articles studied, I found that fine needle aspiration cytology has an accuracy rate on 87 – 97,3 %. The sensitivity was 79 – 92 % and the specificity was 96,5 – 98,5 %. The results were from aspirations from all lesions inn head and neck region.
Conclusion: The results showed that fine needle aspiration is a simple, safe, and cost effective diagnostic method suitable as first line investigation in head and neck masses. It is an essential diagnostic method in the head and neck region, but is though less important than the clinical evaluation.
