Norsk tuberkuloseforskning : oversikt over mykobakterie- og tuberkuloseforskning i Norge 2003-2008

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis contributes only a minor part to the total health burden in Norway, but is a major killer on the global level. Much research needs to be done, in order to get the disease under control. OBJECTIVES: To describe and get a overview over what is done, where it is done, and who does it in respect to norwegian research on tuberculosis. METHODS: By using an PUBMED search and combine it with qualitative interviews with a selection of norwegian researchers, we aim to get an overview over, and to describe norwegian TB research. We want to look at the present situation, and have limited our survey and searches to the last 5 years. RESULTS: Our PUBMED search gives us 126 hits on Norwegian TB research. 2 of our hits were excluded, as they did not fit our subject. This left us with 124 articles about TB from Norwegian researchers. We mapped the institutions that published the articles, and found that the University of Bergen and Oslo and The Norwegian Public Health Institute were the main contributers of papers on TB. CONCLUSION: Our findings leads us to think that TB is not a major priority when it comes to research in Norway. The results demonstrate that even though not many researchers are involved in TB research in Norway, a lot of important and internationally recognized work is done. Funding opportunities are limited, but increasing.
