Abstract

Background: The experiences of women who have negative emotional outcomes, including regret, following an abortion have received little research attention. The present study aims to identify the characteristics of the women who regret the decision of abortion. Qualitative research can elucidate these women experiences and ways their needs can be met and emotional stress reduced. Method: Eighty women were included in the study. The women were interviewed 10 days (T1), 6 months (T2), 2 years (T3) and 5 years (T4) after they underwent abortion. The interviews included a talk, and that women themselves filled out the questionnaires and psychological tests. The interviews were later analysed using qualitative content analysis. Results: Regret after abortion was associated with pressure from the surroundings to terminate a pregnancy and ambivalent feelings. A third point recognizing women who regret, was a need to talk with professionals before making the decision whether to terminate or not, this to make sure whether it was their own decision. The repentant women also had a need for talking with someone about their termination of pregnancy. More robust, definitive research studies are required on mental health after abortion and alternative outcomes such as childbirth. Conclusions: the women who regret their abortion tend to have been under pressure from the surroundings to terminate a pregnancy and tend to need professional support during this decision-making process and after the abortion.
