Dyp hjernestimulering ved essensiell tremor : forskjellen ved stimulering i ventrointermediære og subthalamiske nukleus

Abstract

Essential tremor (ET) is the most common form of tremor disorder. It is characterized by postural or intentional tremor in the absence of any other neurological disease. First choice of treatment is pharmacological. The next choice is surgical with Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). Recent years research have suggested areas in Subthalamic Nucleus (STN) as a better target for this treatment than the traditionally Ventrointermedial nucleus of thalamus (Vim). The goal for this study is therefore to by a literary search in the PubMed, to answer the question Do DBS targeting the STN provide a better tremor control than DBS targeting the Vim in patients with ET. Because of not standardized diagnostic criteria and parameters for follow ups, only articles already comparing the two types of treatments were included. All the articles is vaguely supporting STN as the best target, but the number of patients is too small to make a final conclusion other than that the research is promising so there should be more research in this area and the researchers should use standardized diagnostic criteria and parameters or follow ups to make it easier to compare smaller studies.
