Abstract Introduction: Spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) occurs with an annual incidence of 10 per 10 000 inhabitants in Norway. Cerebral aneurysms are the most frequent cause of SAH, with arteriovenous malformations accounting for 10%. The severity of symptoms is related to the severity of the bleed. Acute ischemia, rebleeding, vasospasms and hydrocephalus are frequent complications. Objective: Quality-control of aneurysmal SAH treatment at Ullevål university hospital in the time period 2003-2006. Material and methods: Retrospective study of all patients with aneurysmal SAH treated with endovascular coiling or craniotomy with clips-ligation of the bleeding aneurysm during the years 2003-2006 at the Department of Neurosurgery, Ullevål University Hospital. Results: A total of 108 patients were treated. 63 % were women. In 78 patients the aneurysm were coiled and in 30 patients the aneurysm were clipped. Clipping was preferred for media-aneurysms, while most of the ACOM-aneurysms and posterior circulation aneurysms were coiled. Overall survival was 70 % at 6 months and 66 % at 1 year. Survival showed a significant correlation with Hunt&Hess grade at time of aneurysm occlusion. Conclusion: The overall survival was somewhat lower than expected. These data initiated a change in management of SAH-patients at Ullevål University Hospital.nor
