Abstract
ENGLISH ABSTRACT
Dysfunction of the thyroid gland represents the commonest endocrine problems. It has widespread manifestations and often requires long-term treatment. Endocrinology is clearly an important part of internal medicine, yet given a low priority of the teaching and in the recommended textbooks at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Oslo.
The background of this project was an interest for endocrinology combined with a relative lack of knowledge in this exciting, but complicated field. The objective was to create a pedagogical alternative to the traditional learning resources for medical students. We wanted to present this subject in a way that would make it easy to understand and memorize, unlike the presentation in textbooks that often is somewhat confusing.
The result is a guide of 50 pages concerning the thyroid gland and the thyroid diseases. The guide includes a chapter in anatomy, physiology, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, goiter, thyroditis, cancer, gynecology, pediatrics, thyroid hormone resistance, laboratory diagnostics and pharmacology. It describes prevalence, signs and symptoms, diagnostics and treatment of the thyroid diseases.
The guide is written in a pedagogical manner with short chapters in Norwegian. All the learning objectives concerning the thyroid gland and the thyroid diseases are covered accurately. The content is up to date and the guide represents an alternative to the classic textbooks in internal medicine.
