Abstract
Teoretisk forankring:

Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to do a survey of Public Health Nurses attitude and needs of qualifications’ before starting the HPV-vaccination as part of the Norwegian public children’s vaccination program. The responsibility for this implementation has been delegated to the Community Health Nurses.
Literature Review:
The Study is based on literature from publications and research reports. To show the Professional differences newspaper articles along with media debates are used. Little information is found that views preliminaries the Public Health Nurses needs in terms of knowledge about such a controversial vaccine prior to its introduction.
Method:
The study has a qualitative, naturalistic design. Two groups of Public Health Nurses were interview twice in focus groups. In addition to the focus group data, a report of a meningitis vaccination trial from 1988-1994 and minutes of a brainstorming session with Public Health Nurses are part of the data. Data were analysed from qualitative perspective by abstracting concepts from the focus groups, the meningococcal report and minutes from the brainstorming with a group of public health nurses.
Results:
The data analysis indicates that Public Health Nurses are sceptical to the HPV-vaccination introduction into the Norwegian public children’s vaccination program. Scepticism is explained by the elements of uncertainty that the vaccine represents together with the nurses lack of knowledge of the vaccine. The study shows that The
Public Health Nurses are in great need of more resources to be able to keep up to date regarding knowledge production. At the same time Public Health Nurses needs resources regarding their mandatory work tasks.
Conclusions:
New descriptions of the Public Health Nurses attitude toward HPV-vaccination are described. The study has produced a proposition for a knowledge program to increase Public Health Nurses qualifications towards HPV-vaccine. The learning program will be essential to a more competent and positive group of Public Health Nurses as the vaccine is introduced into the vaccination program.
