| nor |
dc.description.abstract | Purpose: As part of the effort to improve the quality of nursing the purpose of this study was to gain knowledge about the ability of the patients to cope with the waiting period before admittance for heart surgery.
Frame of reference in nursing theory: Myra Levine's conservation model is used as a theoretical frame of reference, in which energy and well-being is especially emphasized. In addition, parts of Suzi Kim's Domains were used.
Method: A descriptive design was chosen for the quantitative, non-experimental survey study. The patient material included 96 patients. The data were obtained from a questionnaire, mainly with given answers.
Results of the study: The patients in the study seemed to have psychosocial problems such as anxiety, tiredness and depression in the waiting period before admittance to surgery. More than half the patients had expressed the opinion that written information received in the waiting period was helpful, but they would have preferred to receive it at an earlier time. Many patients wanted information, education and counselling from a nurse over the phone while they were waiting for surgery. Patients, who had phoned the head nurse on their own initiative, were those mostly satisfied with the information, education and counselling they had received. Patients who had a long waiting period had a greater wish to receive information, education and counselling with regard to expected psychosocial problems than was the case with patients who had a short waiting period. Also, patients who had waited the longest had a more pronounced need for telephone contact with the head nurse's office. These findings were statistically significant.
Most of the patients felt that a 1-4 weeks waiting period was ideal. The actual waiting period for these patients was approximately 60 days longer than that felt to be ideal. The results showed that older patients did not wait longer than younger patients, and that women did not wait longer than men.Waiting list guarantee (6 months) and treatment guarantee (3 months) were only met for 31% of the patients.
Conclusion: The study has shown that many patients experienced various difficulties and lack of well-being during the waiting period before the heart operation. The investigation showed that written information was sent out at a too late a point in the waiting period. The patients wanted telephone contact in the form of information, education and counselling. It is thought that a better quality of information offer and a shorter waiting period to a large degree will satisfy the patients' needs and can contribute to increased well-being during the waiting period. | eng |
