Abstract
Aim: It is claimed that practical nursing skills have come out of focus in nursing education. One sees an emphasis on human interaction and skills in problem solving. Others have pointed out that today's structure of practicums does not guarantee the fulfilment of the national educational plan's qualitative intentions. The problem formulation has been: Which didactic questions are emphazised by the teachers who shall plan the first clinical practicum and how do they co-operate in this planning phase?
Theoretical foundation: The chosen didactic frame of reference takes as its point of departure the concepts: instructional goals, content, didactic preconditions, learning activities and evaluation. Nursing competence's basic dimensions represent the theoretical fundament in nursing education. In order to show that planning has different practical levels, three concepts from organisational didactics are presented. The planning phase is seen in relation to the level of competence containing the activity of instructional programs.
Method: This study was carried out using a qualitative interview. A semi-structured interview guide was used based on the concepts from the didactic frame of reference. Eight teachers were interviewed. These teachers had experience in the planning of the first practicums for nursing students in patient care in geriatric wards. Each interview was coded according to the didactic concepts. The codes from each interview were sorted into five categories. The findings are presented in an abridged content description from the five categories with a selection of quotations from the text.
Findings: The study shows that the teachers who plan the first clinical practicum based their planning on the colleges plan of instruction. This plan of instruction does not lead to an absolute requirement that the student carry out nursing care procedures during the practicum. A number of the teachers pointed out that they lacked theoretical and practical knowledge of geriatrics. The predominate view is that students learn practical care from nursing aides due to the low number of nurses in nursing homes. The teachers are aware of their need for a forum where they can discuss and develop their program of instruction.
Conclusion: Planning of the clinical practicum is to a large degree done by the individual teacher without a collegial discussion or co-ordination of instructional goals and content, learning activities or evaluation forms.
