Journalistikkens sammenbrudd? : en studie av NRKs TV-aksjon som uttrykk for konflikt mellom ulike journalistiske idealer

Abstract

Skal journalistikken være vaktbikkje eller lim i samfunnet, og er det mulig å kombinere de to funksjonene? Det er dette spørsmålet som ligger til grunn for oppgaven min. Jeg drøfter konkurrerende forventninger til journalisten ved å beskrive uavhengighetsidealet på den ene siden og et kommunitaristisk ideal, som understreker pressens ansvar for å styrke det sosiale fellesskapet, på den andre siden. Dilemmaer som ligger i journalistrollen, belyses gjennom en analyse av NRKs TV-aksjon, som betraktes som en arena for kampen mellom ulike idealer. Ved hjelp av kritisk diskursanalyse og kvalitative intervjuer identifiseres ulike diskurser som farger samtalen i og om TV-aksjonen, og jeg undersøker hvordan journalistens identitet blir konstruert gjennom å bruke noen ord og ekskludere andre. Analysen viser at TV-aksjonen forsvares ved å vise til dens lange tradisjon og innarbeidede form, men også ved å hente argumenter fra kommunitarismen. Dessuten identifiserer analysen en motstand mot den sterke uavhengighetsdiskursen og et ønske om en journalistikk som gir større rom for å fokusere på positive tendenser i samfunnet.

Should journalism be the watchdog or the glue of society – and is it possible to combine the two? That is the core question of this thesis. I discuss the conflicting expectations the journalist meets by describing the ideal of autonomy on the one hand, and a communitaristic ideal that emphasizes the press’ obligation to strengthen the social community, on the other. The dilemmas inherent in the role of the journalist are illustrated through an analysis of NRKs telethon TV-aksjonen, which is considered an arena for struggle between competing ideals. Through critical discourse analysis and qualitative interviews I identify different discourses that influence the conversation in and about TV-aksjonen, and I explore how the journalist’s identity is constructed by using some particular words and excluding others. The analysis shows that TV-aksjonen is justified by reference to its long tradition and well-established form, but also by retrieving arguments from the communitarism. Moreover, the analysis identifies a resistance to the strong discourse of autonomy and a desire for a journalism that opens up for focusing on the positive trends in society.
