Abstract
This thesis investigates why there is a market for the assignment paid news agency Newswire in Norway today. The thesis will also explain how Newswire operates and what they actually do. The theoretical foundation for this thesis is formed by theories and previous research on why companies and organizations might seek professional assistance with their communications work, with a main focus on reputation and communicative challenges –specifically how a message might change in form and meaning during the communication process. To supplement this, the theoretical framework on how companies and organizations can make use of communications professionals will be outlined and discussed. Keywords are reputation, advertising, PR and ”assignment paid news”. The thesis will also cover presumpsions about the media’s need for the appropriate amounts of trustworthy news-content, while downsizing, increased competition and an increased lack of resources influence their day-to-day situation.
Methodologically, a quantitative content analysis with certain qualitative elements is performed on 159 stories that Newswire produced and released in 2006. This to answer the question of what Newswire is, and what they do. Combined with in-depth interviews with the founder and managing director of the company, as well as with four of Newswire’s clients, the analysis answers the initial question of why there is a market for this kind of a company in Norway today.
My main findings is that the product Newswire deliver is in-between PR-material and journalistic news stories - I have chosen to call it formula journalism – and that Newswire can help companies and organizations to communicate their sought for values – something that helps in building a good corporate reputation.
