| nor |
dc.description.abstract | The software market has for the last fifteen years been dominated by Microsoft, a company that has generally focused on control, centralization and commercialization. The last few years, on the other hand, we have seen a gradual increase of software solutions based upon collective production methods and open standards. This trend differs drastically from Microsoft's approach by decentralizing production and moving away from proprietary solutions. In this paper I use a comparative case study of the economic strategies that Microsoft Office and OpenOffice.org are based upon as a starting point. The two players can be said to respectively represent an industrialized and a network based approach to software production. I look at the business models of the two players and their different strategies employed to utilize defined mechanisms of the software market. My analysis shows, amongst other things, that there is a disparity between the business model of Microsoft and fundamental characteristics of software as an immaterial asset. This aspect becomes even more apparent in competition with OpenOffice.org, which can be said to utilize many of the same characteristics of the software. This altered approach to software production can turn out to represent a crossroad, which in the long run will have consequences for how we regard software and other immaterial assets. | eng |
