Abstract
This thesis seeks to examine the hybrid format culture news magazine through analyses of three Norwegian television programmes; Stereo (NRK2), Absolutt underholdning (TV 2) and Extra (TV3), all of which transmitted daily on weekdays. The examination is based on analyses of the transmitted programmes in the weeks 46 and 47 in 2002, and interviews with the Head of Production for each program. The methodological approach is therefore a combination of text and production analysis. In a few cases documents are used in order to elucidate the text and the production analyses. The aim is to examine different structural factors which can have an effect on the possibilities for variety in the journalistic approaches to culture. Further, the aim is to examine the news magazine’s possibilities and conditions for thorough journalistic approaches to culture and for covering culture forms other than pop culture. The text analyses are mainly focused on the programme’s approaches to film as culture product. Firstly, the examinations are demonstrating that time schedules and limited economy have an effect in reducing the possibilities for variety in journalistic approaches. Secondly, the focus on reaching specific and large groups of audiences also has the same reducing effect on the possibilities for variety. The text analyses discover that all three programmes mainly covers pop culture in preference to fine arts. At the same time, the analyses show that the three programmes exploit the format’s possibilities in different ways, and the degree of thoroughness depends on how the format is exploited.
