Abstract
Begrepet paratekst er hentet fra Gérard Genette der det betegner a threshold (...) a zone between text and off-text, a zone not only of transition but also of transaction: a privileged place of pragmatics and a strategy , og "those liminal devices (...) that mediate the relations between the text and reader" (Genette, 1997:xi) I overføringen av dette begrepet havner hovedoppgaven i en analyse av et flytende grensesnitt mellom spesialutgavens innside og utside, teknologi og uttrykk, innhold og overflate, struktur og pragmatikk.
This thesis concerns DVD, movies on DVD and The Lord of the Rings. Fellowship of the Ring. Special Extended Edition (2002) on DVD. DVD is a truly versatile medium. Films are fascinating. The Lord of the Rings. Fellowship of the Ring. Special Extended Edition (LOTR SEE) (2002) is special. This project wants to find out how and why by analyzing LOTR SEE on DVD with regards to its paratextual, narrative and hypermedia characteristics and potentials. The term paratext is related to Gérard Genette where it signifies a threshold (...) a zone between text and off-text, a zone not only of transition but also of transaction: a privileged place of pragmatics and a strategy , and "those liminal devices (...) that mediate the relations between the text and reader" (Genette, 1997:xi). In its adaptation of this term, the thesis ends up in an analysis of a shifting interface between the special edition s inside and outside, technology and forms of expression, content and surface, structure and pragmatics. In addition, the paper also examines the special extended edition of the original film The Fellowhip of the Ring. The question here concerns what kind of narrative implications the extended version might have on the movie s discourse and story.
