Bare en drøm? : en analyse av Mulholland Drive og fortolkninger av filmen i diskusjonsgrupper på internett

Abstract

Denne hovedoppgaven er en kombinasjon av filmanalyse og en kvalitativ resepsjonsanalyse med et medieetnografisk perspektiv. David Lynchs Mulholland Drive (2001) har en utradisjonell narrativ struktur som fikk mange filmkritikere til å omtale den som severdig, men blottet for noen egentlig fortelling. I filmdiskusjonsgrupper på Internett er den primære aktiviteten derimot å snu hver stein i fortellingen. Den overordnede problemstillingen lyder: hva kjennetegner den medierte fortolkningsaktiviteten i Mulholland Drive-diskusjonsgrupper, og hvordan bidrar fortolkningene til å forme diskursen om filmen? Oppgaven undersøker gjennom blant annet drøfting av postmoderne estetikk og kognitiv filmteori hvilke trekk ved filmen som utløser narrativ utforskningstrang. Sentrale teoretikere i filmanalyse-delen er Torben Grodal, Anne Jerslev og David Bordwell. Ved å holde analysen av filmen opp mot utbredte teorier på Internett, forsøker jeg å sirkle inn fortellingens essens, og undersøker om fortolkning i diskusjonsgrupper kan bidra til en større forståelse av Mulholland Drive.

De sentrale analytiske verktøyene i den empiriske delen av oppgaven er dokumentanalyse og diffusjonsteori. Oppgaven argumenterer for at narrasjonen i Mulholland Drive setter fleksible rammer for at tilskuere kan forme filmens tekst, og at narrativets åpenhet muliggjør ulike nivåer av fortolkning som oppleves som meningsfylt av aktørene i nett-kulten. Oppgaven konkluderer med at særlig innovatørene har et stort potensial til å forme meningen med filmteksten, men at deres posisjon i populærkulturens ytterkant gjør dem til en elite uten makt.

Abstract: This thesis is a combination of a film analysis and a qualitative reception-analysis with a media-ethnographic perspective. Mulholland Drive by David Lynch (2001) is a film with an unusual narrative structure, which made many film critics label it as interesting, but void of a real story. In opposition to this, there exists a lot of film discussion groups in the Internet, whose primary activities are to reveal the story of Mulholland Drive. The central question explored is: What are the characteristics of the mediated interpretative activities in Mulholland Drive-discussion forums on the Internet, and how do these interpretations contribute to influence the discourse about this movie? The most important theoretical perspectives utilized to explore this question are discussions of postmodern aesthetics and cognitive film theory. Torben Grodal, Anne Jerslev and David Bordwell are the central theorists in the film analysis. By analyzing my interpretations of the film compared to the theories circulating on the Internet, I narrow down the essence of the films narrative, and explore how film interpretations in cyberspace can contribute to a broader understanding of the film.

The analytical tools in the empirical section of this thesis are document analysis and diffusion theory. The thesis arguments that the film-text creates a flexible framework for the viewers influence over the meaning of the film, and that the openness of the narrative able different levels of interpretation, which are experienced as meaningful by the members of the net-cult. The conclusion is that especially the innovators in the discussion forums contribute significantly in influencing the meaning of this film-text, but their position in the fringes of popular culture, leave them out in the cold as a powerless elite.
