"That's what we mean when we say family" : Sopranos som et amerikansk familieportrett

Abstract

I denne oppgaven skal jeg ta for meg hvordan og til hvilken grad en fiktiv familie kan ses i lys av den virkelighet som omgir den. Det konkrete analyseobjektet er den amerikanske TV-serien Sopranos (HBO 1998-). Oppgavens hovedmål er å gi et innblikk i hvordan familien blir framstilt i denne serien, og ikke minst om og hvordan dette fiktive uttrykket er farget av den utenforliggende konteksten. Dette vil vurderes gjennom forskjellige innfallsvinkler. For det første er det et poeng hva slags virkelighet som omkranser teksten og hvordan denne virkeligheten innholdsmessig sett påvirker fiksjonen. Dette vil hovedsakelig bli diskutert i lys av framstillingen av familien som helhet, av familiens etniske herkomst og av én viktig og bærende rolle i familien, rollen som mann og far. For det andre vil det også bli vurdert hva selve seriens form har å si for hvordan virkeligheten kan leses inn i teksten.

In this paper I will consider how and to what degree a fictional family can be seen as a result of its surrounding realities. The text which will be analyzed, is the American TV-series The Sopranos (HBO 1998-). My aim is to gain an insight into how this particular fictional family is portrayed, and also, perhaps even more important, if and how this fictional expression can be seen in relation to its context. I will try to examine this from different angles. First of all, a major point will be what kind of reality there is that surrounds the text and how this reality may be influencing the content of the fiction itself. This will mainly be considered through the depiction of the family as a whole, through how the family's ethnic background is described and also through the portrait of one important role in the family, the role of the husband and father. Secondly, I intent to show how the form of the series itself is able to influence the way the surrounding context might be understood within the text.
