Vidunderlige nye bokverden... : om boka og det litterære systems utfordringer i den digitale tidsalder

Abstract

Denne oppgaven er et essay om de utfordringer det litterære system står overfor, som en følge av at vår kultur gjennom de siste 10 år har blitt mer og mer digital. Det litterære system har i likhet med den øvrige kultur levd i en analog verden, men presset og utfordringene fra det digitale felt, får og har allerede fått - konsekvenser for det litterære system. Essayet er dermed en beretning om den litterære institusjon i spenningsfeltet mellom en analog og digital virkelighet. En viktig dimensjon i oppgaven er boka som medium, og jeg argumenterer for at det tradisjonelle bokmediet har kvaliteter ved seg, som den digitale skjerm ikke kan erstatte fullt ut. Jeg konkluderer derfor med at både den digitale og analoge bok kommer til å leve side om side, og vil brukes på ulike måter av ulike mennesker. Oppgaven gjennomgår også de fire hovedaktørene i det litterære system; forfatteren, forleggeren, bokhandleren og leseren, og hvert essay ser på hvilke utfordringer hver av disse aktørene står overfor, i møte med en digital virkelighet. Oppgavens form er lagt opp som et formelt essay, dette fordi oppgavens 'usikre' tema samsvarer godt med essayets 'usikre' form.

This thesis is an essay about the new challenges in the literary field, due to the digitalizing of the norwegian and western culture over the past 10 years. The literary field has, like other parts of our culture, been living in an analogous world until very recently, but the pressure and challanges from the digital reality, will have profound consequences for the whole literary field. This essay is a story of the literary institution in between the analogous past, and the new, digital reality. An important dimension in this thesis, is the book as a medium. I argue for, that the classic book as a medium, has certain qualities, that the digital screen can not replace once and for all. My conclusion is that the digital and convential book, will live side by side, used in different ways by different people also, based on what types of texts are being read. The essay also investigates the different parts of the literary field; the author, the publisher, the bookseller, and the reader. Each of these essays, tries to understand in what ways the digital challenge will alter, and possibly transform, parts of the literary field. The thesis is written in the form of a formal essay, and the reason is simple: the object of this journey which is the literary field in an uncertain digital age, is well fit for the essay. Since the essay is an uncertain genre, it is quite in sound with my uncertain topic.
