Abstract

Stuart Halls Encoding/decoding-modell er kalt et vendepunkt innen cultural studies. Denne oppgaven vil undersøke den teoretiske bakgrunnen for modellen, sette et kritisk søkelys på selve modellen, samt undersøke hvilke rammer modellen satte for David Morley i hans Nationwide-undersøkelse. For å undersøke utviklingen av cultural studies fram mot Encoding/decoding er det nødvendig å se den teoretiske bakgrunnen på tre områder. For det første er det viktig å undersøke tekstene til enkelte av cultural studies Founding Fathers . For det andre må man undersøke Stuart Halls tidlige arbeider, samt tekster innen Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies (CCCS) ved University of Birmingham. For det tredje må man undersøke teorier utenfor cultural studies som direkte og indirekte hadde en innvirkning på cultural studies og på Encoding/decoding-modellen. Oppgaven vil også gi et kritisk syn på Halls modell, med vekt på svakheter både i enkoding- og i dekodingdelen av modellen. David Morley tok utgangspunkt i Halls modell i sin undersøkelse av publikums tolkninger av programmet Nationwide. Morley fant at modellen hadde en for enkel framstilling av hvilke tolkninger publikum av et TV-program gjør.

Stuart Hall s Encoding/decoding model has been branded as a turning point within British cultural studies. This thesis will investigate the model s theoretical background, offer a critical view of the model itself and investigate to what extent Hall s model limited David Morley in his Nationwide study. In order to investigate the model s theoretical background, it is necessary to focus on three areas of study. First, it is necessary to investigate the work of cultural studies Founding Fathers . Second, one has to take a close look at Stuart Hall s work prior to the Encoding/decoding model as well as various texts emitting from the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies (CCCS) at the University of Birmingham. Third, one has to investigate theories outside cultural studies that, directly or indirectly, had effect on the Encoding/decoding model. In giving a critical view of Hall s model, emphasis is put on weaknesses on both the encoding- and decoding side of the model. In his reception study of the programme Nationwide, David Morley tested the Encoding/decoding model empirically. Morley found the Hall s model had a too simple notion of the decodings TV audiences do.
