Sympathy for the devil : antagonister i nyere amerikansk actionfilm

Abstract

Denne oppgaven er en undersøkelse og drøfting av antagonisters egenskaper og funksjoner i nyere amerikansk actionfilm. Oppgaven består av en innledende, kvantitativ innholdsundersøkelse av et utvalg actionfilmer som gikk på norske kinoer i 1997. Her sees det blant annet på antagonistenes demografiske trekk, personlige egenskaper, motiver og relative plassering og funksjon innen filmenes univers. Deretter følger en drøfting av hvordan et heterogent publikum kan tenkes å oppfatte og tolke denne type filmer og fiendebilder. Det legges spesielt vekt på ulike former for sympati og identifikasjon med filmkarakterene, og på hvordan egenskaper ved både filmer og publikum kan bidra til forhandlende og opposisjonelle leserstrategier. Avslutningsvis foretas en grundigere analyse av filmen Face/Off med utgangspunkt i det ovenstående.

This study is an examination and discussion of antagonists traits and functions in contemporary, American action-movies. It consists of an introductory, quantitative analysis of a selection of action movies screened in Norwegian cinemas in 1997. Examined are, amongst other factors, the antagonists demographics, personal traits, motives and relative placement and functions within the narratives. This examination is followed by a discussion of how a heterogeneous audience might perceive and interpret these kinds of films and villains. Stress is placed upon how audiences in different ways might sympathise and identify with the characters, and how factors whithin both the movies and audience-groups might contribute to negotiated and oppositional readings. The study is concluded by a more thorough analysis of the movie Face/Off, based partly on the above-mentioned discussion.
