Da Bergman kom til Bjoneroa : bygdekinoen som film og analyseobjekt

Abstract

Denne hovedoppgaven består både av en film og en skriftlig del. Filmen er en 30 minutters dokumentar om Norsk Bygdekinos glanstid på 50-tallet med tittelen Da Bergman kom til Bjoneroa. Filmen er et forsøk på å nærme seg en historisk epoke på en noe mer personlig og subjektiv måte enn det som er vanlig innenfor dokumentarfilm. I den skriftlige delen av oppgava har jeg valgt å fokusere på filmen som historisk dokument. Her snur jeg på flisa, og drøfter hvorvidt en slik subjektiv tilnærming er forenlig med det å presentere historisk stoff. Med utgangspunkt i bruken av arkivfilm-klipp drøfter jeg hva slags bilde Bygdekino-filmen gir av den aktuelle tidsperioden. Jeg forøker både å utforske arkivfilm som virkemiddel, og å drøfte om dette fortellerelementet, som i utgangs-punktet gir en "direkte" tilgang til fortiden, i mange tilfelle også kan sies å tilsløre historiske sammenhenger. Mot slutten av oppgava diskuterer jeg mer generelle problemstillinger omkring dokumentarfilmens forhold til virkeligheten. Den teoretiske innfallsvinkelen er først og fremst Bill Nichols' begreper "story" og "argument", som han hevder karakteriserer hhv. fiksjonsfilm og dokumentar.

This is a "double" project. It consists both of a film and a written thesis. The film is a 30 minute television documentary about an ambulatory film service which operated in the Norwegian countryside during the first two decades of the post-war period. In fact, it still exists, but the 50's were its golden days, before television arrived. "The Rural Cinema" showed films in the remotest parts of the country, and had a considerable influence on those who grew up with it. In the film we call them "The Rural Cinema Generation". In the written thesis I start by discussing how the film presents this period of our recent history, and I then move on to discuss more general aspects regarding representations of the past. I focus on the archive material; how it is being used throughout the film to characterize "the age of reconstruction" which is a common way of describing this particular period. As a theoretical model I am using Bill Nichols' concepts "story" and "argument", which according to Nichols express the main differences between fiction and documentary. I then try to answer if the film is giving a fictionalized account of the post-war years, or if it uses narrative techniques to tell about these years in a "new" way.
