Postmans galakse : om innflytelsen fra McLuhan og om den retoriske gjennomslagskraften i Neil Postmans medieteori

Abstract

I denne oppgaven undersøker jeg to ulike sider av den amerikanske forfatteren og mediekritikeren Neil Postmans arbeider. Den første delen tar opp forbindelsen til 60-tallets store medie-guru, Marshall McLuhan. Gjennom komparative analyser av det medieteoretiske grunnlaget og historiesynet hos de to, viser jeg at innflytelsen fra McLuhan ligger mest på det generelle plan. Postman utvikler sin medietenkning hovedsakelig utfra et språklig perspektiv, han fokuserer på diskurs i sin forståelse av mediene. McLuhans teori er mer sammensatt, med både lingvistiske, kognitive og perseptuelle sider. Den andre delen er en retorisk analyse av Postmans bok Amusing Ourselves to Death, hvor jeg særlig trekker inn den klassiske retorikkens lære om bevismidler, ethos, pathos og logos, og det sofistiske konseptet kairos. Undersøkelsen forsøker å fange noe av bokens gjennomslagskraft ved å vise hvordan disse retoriske elementene preger dens diskurs.

This thesis probes two different aspects of the American writer and media critic Neil Postman's works. The first part is a study of his connection with the 60s media-guru Marshall McLuhan. Through comparative analysis of the media-theoretical foundations and the view of history, I show that the influence of McLuhan on Postman is mostly of a general character. Postman develops his theory from a linguistic perspective, emphasizing discourse in his understanding of the media, whereas McLuhan's approach is multidisciplinary, emphasizing linguistic, cognitive and sensory aspects. The second part is a rhetorical analysis of Postman's book Amusing Ourselves to Death, with a focus on the rhetorical 'means of evidence',ethos, pathos and logos, and the concept of kairos. The analysis tries to capture some of Postman's 'power to convince' by showing how these rhetorical elements characterize the discourse.
