Thriller : studie av en sjanger som får deg til å føle

Abstract

Hva er en thriller? Hvordan ser den ut, hvordan høres den ut, og hva får den deg til å føle? Denne masteroppgaven studerer thrillersjangeren både fra et tilskuerperspektiv og fra et tekstperspektiv. Oppgaven har ambisjoner om å fylle et tomrom i den eksisterende litteraturen ved å studere thrillerens intenderte, emosjonelle innvirkning på tilskueren, og å se nærmere på sjangerens bruk av audiovisuelle virkemidler i filmteksten. Underveis brukes fire utvalgte filmer som analyseeksempler, Marathon Man (1976), The Shining (1980), Seven (1995) og Insomnia (1997). Ved å se etter sjangertrekk i tilskuerreaksjoner, tilskuerposisjoner, filmstil og attraksjoner ønsker oppgaven dessuten å bidra til en mer mangefasettert tilnærming til sjanger.

What is a thriller? How does it look, how does it sound, and what does it make you feel? This thesis analyses the thriller genre both by looking at spectator engagement and the films themselves. The ambition behind the thesis is to fill a void in the theoretical litterature by studying the thriller’s intended emotional effect on the spectator, and by examening the use of audiovisual elements in the films. Four films will be used as examples throughout, Marathon Man (1976), The Shining (1980), Seven (1995) and Insomnia (1997). By searching for genre conventions in how the spectator is encouraged to react and engage in the film, as well as through film style and the use of attractions, the thesis aspires to contribute towards a more complex approach to genre.
