Abstract
This master's thesis «Mothers and Monsters – an analysis of the mother in the Alien-saga» is a study of the always recurring image of the mother in Alien, Aliens, Alien3 and Alien: Resurrection. The purpose of this project is to show where this maternal image is located in the film series univers. Trough my symptomous analysis of the Alien-saga and the heroine of the movie, Ellen Ripley, I argue that the maternal image is connected to the entire universe of the Alien-saga. The image and the understanding of the maternal is neither constant or concret, but can be read as both ambiguous and equivocal. As the story unfolds the heroine of the film is increasingly related to the maternal image. In the Aliens-saga different incarnations of the maternal figure is exposed; the monstrous mother, the monster mother, the family mother in a dysfunctional family, the religious mother and the post-modern mother.
