Allan Holdsworth : reshaping harmony

Abstract

Allan Holdsworth har siden begynnelsen av 70-tallet vist seg som en unik og innovativ gitarist. Gjennom sine jazzrock-komposisjoner og improvisatoriske egenskaper har han influert legedariske artister som Frank Zappa og Eddie Van Halen.

Denne oppgava tar for seg improvisasjon og musikalske strukturer slik Holdsworth selv forstår de. Videre analyseres tre forskjellige låter for å avekke hvordan hans særegne tilnærming til blandt annet akkorder, skalaer og klang preger musikken. Det blir også rettet fokus mot gitartekniske aspekter og hvordan de står i sammenheng med uttykket til Allan Holdsworth.

Allan Holdsworth has since the beginning of the seventies proven to be a unique and innovative guitarist. Through his jazz-rock compositions and skills in improvisation he has influenced legendary artists like Frank Zappa and Eddie Van Halen.

This thesis examines improvisation and musical structures the way Holdsworth himself understands them. Three different songs are subjected to analysis in order to identify how his personal approach to for example chords, scales and sound characterizes the music. Focus is also given to guitar technical aspects and their relationship to the musical expression of Allan Holdsworth.
