Located in the intersection between popular musicology, popular music studies and gender studies, this thesis is concerned with country music and the way Dolly Parton portrays and negotiates aspects of gender, sexuality and authenticity. With an intertextual approach, I have tried to show some of the ways in which the music, the voice, the gaze and the narrative is connected and negotiated in Dolly Parton’s performances, investigating her feminist appeal as well as some of the reasons for her mainstream success.eng
