dc.description.abstractIn my thesis I have examined how Americans understand the concepts of fairness and equality in relation to affirmative action, and how this differes according to whether the focus is on race or gender. I have looked at the affirmative action debate in popular magazines from 1995 to 2000, and I have been especially concerned with the way popular magazines present the issue of affirmative action. I found that both arguments and language in relation to affirmative action changed completely when the focus was on gender as opposed to race.nor
