This thesis investigates the status of English in Norway. English is an emerging world language that is increasingly being used as a lingua franca. New technology provides opportunities for contact with English, both exposure and communication. I investigated the relationship of 107 Norwegian secondary school pupils with English through a questionnaire. I hypothesized that English is no longer a foreign language in Norway, and found that English is neither a typical foreign language nor a typical second language in Norway. The situation for a learner of English in Norway is not the same as for a learner in an English-speaking country, but English has a special status that distinguishes it from other foreign languages.eng
