Grunnar til handling

Abstract

Denne masteroppgåva handlar om grunnar til handling. Målet med oppgåva er todelt. Det første eg vil freista å finna svar på er om noko kan vera ein grunn til handling for ein aktør, uavhengig av aktøren sine allereie eksisterande motivasjonar. Dette er spørsmålet om kor vidt sokalla eksterne grunnar er moglege. Det andre eg vil freista å finna svar på er kvifor ein aktør, blant eit tilsynelatande endelaus tilfang av grunnar, endar opp med å handla av den grunnen han til sist handlar av, heller enn av ein annan grunn.

Det første sprøsmålet vil eg gje eit positivt svar. Men eg vil legga til, i takt med eit argument frå Christine Korsgaard, at ein slik grunn berre kan motivera ein aktør i den grad aktøren er rasjonell. Det andre spørsmålet vil eg delvis besvara ved å hevda, i takt med eit argument frå Jonathan Dancy, at det at ein aktør har ein grunn ikkje er basert på at aktøren trur at han har ein slik grunn, men i sjølve innhaldet i denne oppfatninga. Det vil seia, i grunnen sjølv. Dei mentale tilstandane til aktøren er ikkje nødvendige føresetnadar for at noko kan vera ein grunn, men heller mogleggjerande føresetnadar. Eg vil hevda at vi handlar av dei grunnar vi til sist handlar av, heller enn av andre grunnar, som følgje av at mange av dei grunnar vi handlar av er interne, forstått som at dei mentale tilstandane til aktøren mogleggjer at vi handlar på nokre grunnar heller enn andre i vår daglege omgang med omverda. Den andre delen av svaret er at i den grad vi er rasjonelle aktørar, so kan vi og handla av eksterne grunnar. Dette er grunnar som kan motivera ein kvar rasjonell aktør, og ein kan nytta omgrepet praktisk identitet til å forklara kvifor ein handlar av ein bestemt ekstern grunn heller enn av ein annan.

This thesis is on reasons for action. The goal of the thesis is twofold. The first question it aims to answer is whether something can be a reason for action for an agent, regardless of this agents already existing motivations. This is the question about whether so called external reasons are possible. The second question it aims to answer is why an agent, from a seemingly endless number of available reasons, ends up acting on those reasons he in fact acts on.

The first of these two questions I will give a positive answer, but with a qualification following an argument from Christine Korsgaard, that such an external reason is capable of motivating an agent only insofar as the agent is rational. The latter question I will answer partly by, following an argument from Jonathan Dancy, claiming that the reasons for which an agent acts are not based in the belief of the agent that he has such a reason, but rather in the content of this belief, e.g. the reason itself. The mental conditions of the agent are not necessary conditions, but enabling conditions for reasons for action. My claim is that we act on the reasons we in fact act because many of the reasons we act on are internal, understanding internal in such way that the mental conditions of the agent enables acting on some reasons rather the others in our day-to-day acting on reasons. The other part of the answer will be that we can also, insofar as we are rational, act on external reasons. These are reasons that can motivate any rational actor, and the term practical identity can help explain why it is we act on the external reasons we end up acting on.
