Knowledge in acting : a survey of Anscombe's account of practical knowledge

Abstract

I Masteroppgåva mi gjev eg ei analyse av Elizabeth Anscombe sin teori om intensjonale handlingar slik som ho presentere den i hennar kanoniske verk ”Intetnion” frå 1957. Hovud fokuset i min diskusjon ligg på dei verktøy som Anscombe kjem opp med for å beskrive handling. Desse verktøya er karakteristikken av intensjonale handlingar som noko vi veit ikkje på grunnlag av observasjon, og at eit ’kvifor?’ spørsmål er berettiga. Eg vil argumentere for at måten som Anscombe nærmar seg temaet handling i seg sjølv har filosofisk meining. Anscombe byrje sin diskusjon av intensjonar med nokre klåre eksemplar av intensjonale handlingar. Når ein agent har ikkje observasjonal kunnskap om kva ho gjer og kan svare på eit ’kvifor’ spørsmål, så kan ein seie at denne hendinga er ei intensjonal handling. I tilegg til ikkje observasjonell kunnskap og kvifor spørsmålet så er det nokre føresetnadar som må på plass for at vi kan seie at vi veit kva vi gjer. Med å beskriving av fenomenet i presens notid så fokusere Anscombe på handlings sida av intensjonar. Hovudargumentet i oppgåva er at å handle intensjonalt er eit sett å vite, som er essensiell annleis enn den teoretiske måten å vite noko. Kunnskap i handling er praktisk kunnskap. Bestanddelande i denne typen kunnskap trer fram gjennom undersøkinga av ikkje observasjonell kunnskap, føresetnader som markere eit sett vi kan vite korleis, og at ein kan bruke ’kvifor’ spørsmålet på ein måte. Eg vil hevde at i ”Intention” er kunnskap beskrive som basis tilstand i intentionale handlingar, og eg finn denne beskrivinga som ei sann beskriving av desse hendingane.

In my paper I will give an analyse of Elizabeth Anscombe’s theory of intentional actions as she present it in her canonical work Intention from 1957. My discussion will primarily be focusing on the tools that Anscombe provides in order to describe what action is. Thesse tools are the characterisation of intentional action as known not by matter of observation, and that when something is an intentional action the question ‘Why?’ has application. I will argue that the way Anscombe approach the subject of action does in itself have philosophical impact. Anscombe approach the subject of intention with some clear-cut examples of intentional action. When the agent has non-observational knowledge of what she is doing and may answer the ‘Why?’ question, then one may say that the event is an intentional action. In addition to the non-observational knowledge, and the question ‘Why?’ there is also some pre-conditions that have to be in place in order for us to say that we know what we are doing. In starting with the description of the phenomena in the present tense Anscombe focus on the practical side of intention. The main argument of my paper, though, is that acting intentionally is a certain way of knowing, essentially different from the theoretical way of knowing. Knowledge in acting is practical knowledge. The features of this kind of knowledge is being brought out by the enquiry into ‘non-observational knowledge’, the pre conditions that demarks the way we ‘know how to’, and the application of the question ‘Why?’ My claim is that knowledge is in this way described as the basic state in intentional action, and I find this to be a true description of these events.
