Ethics and Freedom within Spinoza's system of Necessary Determinism

Abstract

Spinoza opererte innenfor strenge rammer av forklaringsrasjonalisme og postulerte et metafysisk rammeverk som med streng nødvendighet var determinert. Dette medfører blant annet at Spinoza avviser fri vilje, samt 'godt' og 'ondt' som moralske dommer. Oppgaven omhandler hvordan frihet likevel er en sentral del av Spinozas filosofiske system, og at en type selvdeterminisme er kompatibel med det nødvendige rammeverket. For å vise dette blir det først redegjort for Spinoza's modalmetafysikk, angående argumentet for substansmonisme og hva som følger av mulighet nødvendighet. Deretter følger hans paralellismedoktrine, hvordan Spinoza ønsket å vise at tanke og utstrekning er ett og det samme. Målet er endelig å vise hvordan disse ideene flettes sammen til å vise en helt nødvendig determinert verden, som likevel er kompatibel med en viss type frihet og moralitet.

Spinoza had a strict determined world view and his metaphysical framework was according to him a result of necessity. This allowed Spinoza to reject free will and moral concepts of 'good' and 'evil. This thesis suggest that freedom nevertheless is a central part of Spinoza's philosophical system, and that a kind of self-determinism is compatible with his necessary framework. To show this the thesis will first attend to Spinoza's modal metaphysics, regarding the argument for substance monism and what follows of necessity and possibility. After that it will discuss Spinoza's parallelism doctrine, and how he argued that thought and extension are one and the same thing. The goal is to show how these elements in Spinoza's thought combines to show a completely and necessary determined world, which nevertheless is compatible with a certain kind of freedom and morality.
