Style as Choice : The Octagon portal of Trondheim Cathedral

Abstract

Nidarosdomens oktogonportal er stilistisk sammensatt og har vist seg vanskelig å datere nøyaktig. Forskningshistorien har stort sett antatt at den må være samtidig med resten av Oktogonens fasade, det vil si fra 1180-årene. Dette har vært basert på studier av kapitelenes ikonografi og vurderinger av enkelte stiltrekk. Denne masteroppgaven tar for seg teorien om stil som resultat av en rekke aktive valg under den kunstneriske prosessen og ser på alle Oktogonportalens stil-elementer i lys av dette. Etter en innføring i idéen bak stil som valg og en stilanalyse av portalens elementer i sin helhet, drøftes det om denne teorien kan brukes på Oktogonportalen og hva resultatet blir. Hovedmålet med denne oppgaven er å undersøke hvorvidt dette perspektivet kan brukes på dette emnet og om det i så fall kan tilføre ny informasjon om intensjonene bak portalen, om arbeiderne og deres opprinnelse og om dateringen.

The Octagon portal of Trondheim Cathedral is stylistically complex and has proven difficult to give a precise dating. The research history largely assumes that it must be contemporary with the Octagon facade, i.e. from the 1180’s. This has been based on iconographical studies of the portal’s capitals and on brief analysis of certain stylistic features. This MA dissertation deals with the theory of style as the result of a number of active choices during the artistic process and views the stylistic elements of the Octagon portal in light of this. There is first an introduction to the theory of style as choice, then a stylistic analysis of the portal in its entirety and finally a discussion about the relevance of this perspective for the Octagon portal. The main objective of this MA is to examine whether the style as choice perspective can be used on this subject and whether it can bring to light new information about the intentions behind the portal, the workers and their origin and about the dating.
