Abstract

Fokuset i denne tese er rettet på minimal semantikk og distinksjonen mellom semantikk og pragmatikk. Nærmest alle teorier lar innhold av pragmatisk karakter spille inn på hvordan semantisk mening er determinert. Min antagelse er at dette ikke er nødvendig og at det er mulig å forklare semantisk mening som komplett og determinerbar uten pragmatisk påvirkning. Innledningen gir en generell fremstilling av Kontekstualisme og Semantisk Minimalisme. Andre kapittel introduserer distinktsjonen mellom semantikk og pragmatikk, og spørsmålet hvorvidt mening i forbindelse med setninger kan tas for å være komplett på et semantisk nivå eller ikke. Denne problemstilling er tatt opp videre i det tredje kapittel hvor fokuset er mere rettet på indeksikalier og modularitet sammenlignet med de to foregående kapitler. De filosofer som har fått mest oppmerksomhet er: Emma Borg, Robyn Carston, John Perry, Kent Bach og Herman Cappelen og Ernie Lepore.

The focus of this thesis is pointed at minimal semantics and the distinction between semantics and pragmatics. Almost all theories allow for pragmatic content to play a role in the task of recovering semantic meaning and propositional content. My assumption is that this is not necessary and that it is possible to explain determinable semantic meaning as propositional content without pragmatic intrusion. The introduction provides a general representation of Semantic Minimalism and Contextualism. The second chapter introduces the distinction between semantics and pragmatics, and the question whether sentence meaning on a semantic level is complete or not. This issue is addressed further in the third chapter where the focus is more directed at indexicals and modularity compared to the two previous chapters. The philosophers who have received most attention are: Emma Borg, Robyn Carston, John Perry, Kent Bach and Herman Cappelen and Ernie Lepore.
