Samtaler om reinkarnasjon : en kvalitativ undersøkelse av en gruppe informanters refleksjoner omkring temaet reinkarnasjon

Abstract

Sammendrag Denne avhandlingen er en undersøkelse av en gruppe informanters refleksjoner omkring Reinkarnasjon. Mitt anliggende er imidlertid bredere orientert enn å studere feltet reinkarnasjon. Oppgaven er opptatt av hvordan informanter som identifiserer seg med et annet tradisjonsgrunnlag reflekterer omkring forestillingen reinkarnasjon og eventuelt på hvilken måte de relaterer det til sin egen livstolkning. Siktet med analysen er å belyse kultur som en dynamisk prosess. Oppgaven innehar tre analysekapiteler. Det første søker å beskrive hvordan informantene forholder seg til fenomenet reinkarnasjon filtrert gjennom tradisjonene kristen folketro New age. Informantene inviteres til å snakke om reinkarnasjon, men det er ikke nødvendigvis slik at reinkarnasjon er temaet informantene forholder seg til, men fanger opp og hører tidligere eller mellomliggende stemmer. Informantene henter frem ulike områder eller temakretser når de inviteres til å snakke om reinkarnasjon. Det andre analysekapittelet vil prøve å vise at informantene i ulik grad har språk for å kunne snakke omkring reinkarnasjon. På den ene siden så bruker de naturlig nok det språket de er vant til å bruke. Samtidig forsøker de å reflektere rundt egne og andres erfaringer gjennom å låne språk fra andre tradisjoner. I særlig grad er kapittelet opptatt av hvordan og i hvilken grad språklige elementer fra folketro og/eller kristen tradisjon aktiveres i samtalen om reinkarnasjon. I tillegg til å påvise etablert språkbruk, er jeg også opptatt av å vise hvordan den enkelte informant sine kommentarer gir viktig informasjon om deres egen individuelle fortolkning i samtalen om reinkarnasjon. Det tredje analysekapittel viser hvordan informantenes beskrivelser av rom/tid kan sies å sammenfalle med kulturelle/religiøse konstruksjoner. I tillegg er det en tendens i materialet at en rekke av informantene former memoratene sine på bakgrunn av et flashback av fortiden på spesielle steder. Det innebærer imidlertid ikke nødvendigvis at det ikke kan være tale om genuine opplevelser. Oppgaven viser at informantene berører kulturelle konstruksjoner som har å gjøre med tolkningselementer innen reinkarnasjon, men informantene er ikke opptatt av åndelig utvikling på samme måte som det dreier seg om innenfor en mer etablert reinkarnasjonstro. Det kan synes som at det sentrale er en identitetsforankring som skaper et fast punkt i noe som er større utover dette nåværende livet. Søken etter svar på eksistensielle spørsmål anses være viktig.

Summary This thesis is a study of a group of informants reflections about Reincarnation. My concern is in the meanwhile more broadly oriented than a study of the field of reincarnation. The thesis is concerned with how informants who identify themselves with a different belief system reflect on a conception of reincarnation and possibly in which way they relate it to their own personal life-interpretation. The goal of the analysis is to illuminate culture as a dynamic process. The thesis consists of three analysis chapters. The first seeks to describe how the informants relate to the phenomena reincarnation filtered through the traditions Christianity Folk Belief New Age. The informants are invited to talk about reincarnation, but reincarnation is not necessarily the theme the informants keep to, but they pick up on and hear earlier or intervening voices. The informants call upon different areas or thematic circles when they are invited to speak about reincarnation. The other analysis chapter will attempt to show that the informants to differing degrees have language to talk about reincarnation. On the other hand, they naturally use the language they are acustomed to using. At the same time they attempt to reflect over their own and others experiences by borrowing language from other traditions. To a significant degree the chapter is concerned with how and to which degree language elements from folk belief tradition and/or Christian tradition are activated in the conversation on reincarnation. In addition to demonstrating an established use of language, I am also concerned with how the individual informant s comments give important information about their own individual interpretation in the conversation on reincarnation. The third analysis chapter shows how the informants descriptions of space/time can be said to coincide with cultural/religious constructions. In addition there is a tendency in the material that a number of the informants form their memorates on the background of a flashback to the past occuring at special places. This however does not necessarily imply that the informants touch on cultural constructions that have to do with elements of interpretation within reincarnation, but that the informants are not concerned with spiritual development in the same way that is common within more established reincarnation belief systems. It can appear that a firm anchoring of identity is of central importance, that creates a solid basis in something that is bigger than the current here and now life. The search for answers to existential questions are considered to be important.
