Konservering av et antatt spansk genremaleri fra Otto Valstads samling

Abstract

Denne masteroppgaven tar for seg konserveringen av maleriet Ung Mann (A 222), som er et oljemaleri på lerret, med formatet 88,5 x 74 cm. Motivet er av en ung mann i halvfigur som heller vin fra en vinmugge ned i en keramikkbolle. Maleriet er hverken signert eller datert, og kunstner og datering er ukjent.

Maleriet tilhører Asker Museum - Valstad samlinger. I gjenstandsregisteret ved museet har det blitt notert at Ung mann ble kjøpt i Spania av Otto Valstad, og at det har en tilknyting til Riberaskolen. Ut ifra gitt informasjon har det blitt forsøkt å knytte maleriet til en kulturhistorisk og maleteknisk kontekst. Det har også blitt utført identifisering av materialer og maleteknikker for å avdekke mer om maleriets opphav.

Maleriets tilstand før behandling ble dokumentert ved hjelp av visuelle og tekniske analyser på maleriet. Disse analysene avdekket også tidligere skader og konserveringsbehandlinger som har blitt gjort på maleriet. Denne dokumentasjonen og informasjon fra museet var grunnlaget for valg av behandling som skulle utføres på maleriet høsten 2011.

Ved undersøkelse av maleriet ble det først gjort visuelle undersøkelser, anvendt ulike typer fotoanalytiske teknikker og utført EDXRF-analyser. Tolkningen av dette la grunnlaget for hvor det skulle tas ut tverrsnitt av malingsstrukturen og hvilke av mikroprøvene som skulle analyseres i SEM-EDS. Det ble også tatt mikroprøver fra grunderingslagene og dubleringsklisteret som ble analysert i FTIR.

De mest omfattende behandlingsinngrepene ble foretatt i forbindelse med fjerning av dubleringslerretet og dubleringslimet fra baksiden av originallerretet. Dette ble gjort for å stabilisere lerretets tilstand. Det store omfanget av rifter og hull i originallerretet gjorde det også nødvendig å heldublere maleriet på nytt.

This master thesis describes the analysis and treatment of the painting Ung mann (A222), a painting in oil on canvas with the measurements 88, 5 x 74 cm. The painting is a half-length portrait and depicts a young man pouring vine from a jug into a ceramic bowl. The painting is not signed or dated, and both the artist and the dating is unknown.

The painting is owned by the Asker Museum-Valstad collections. Records from the museum database tells the painting was purchased in Spain by Otto Valstad, and that the painting has a connection to the students of Jusepe de Ribera.

Based on information provided by the museum, and the motif itself, it was attempted to find the provenience of the painting. It was also attempted to tie the painting to a cultural historical context and art technical period based on the given information, visual examination of painting techniques and identification of the materials used.

By use of various analysis, the condition of the painting before treatment was documented. The examination reveals damages and previous treatments on the painting. This documentation, together with information from the museum, was the basis for deciding what treatments to perform.

Examination of the painting was done through visual inspection, various types of photo analytical methods and by EDXRF-analysis. The interpretation of the results helped decide where to extract cross-sections of the paint layers, and what micro samples to examine using SEM-EDS. Micro samples was also extracted from the ground layer and from glue on the lining fabric for analysis in FTIR.

The most extensive part of the treatment was removal of lining and the remaining glue at the back of the canvas. This was done to stabilize the condition for the canvas. The large number of tears and holes in the canvas also made it necessary to reline the painting.
