Zapata vive, la lucha sigue! : 70 years of struggle for land and emancipation in the Tojolabal community of ejido Tabasco, Chiapas, Mexico (1930 - 1998)

Abstract

Oppgaven tar for seg utviklingen i den sørlige delstaten Chiapas i Mexico fra 1930 til slutten av det tjuende århundre - en utvikling som ender i et væpna opprør mot regjeringsmakten i 1994.

Oppgaven diskuterer hvordan dette opprøret oppstår i samspill mellom de indianske folkene som fram til ca 1930 levde som "leilendinger" på store gårdskompleks ("fincas") og utenforstående grupper som kommer til Chiapas av ulike politiske og religiøse årsaker, og som slår seg sammen med indianernes kamp. Oppgaven er skrevet med utgangspunkt i de lille indianersamfunnet ejido Tabasco, befolket av indianere fra gruppen Tojolabaler.

Oppgaven er delt i fire stadier, basert på de gruppene som kommer utenfra og bidrar til denne kampen: ca 1930 - 40: Regjeringens politikk endres, og landsbygda i Chiapas inkluderes i det meksikanske nasjonale prosjekt gjennom president Lazaro Cardenas og hans reformer. ca 1960 - 70: Den katolske kirken og frigjøringsteologien kommer til Chiapas. ca 1970- 80: Ulike venstreorienterte prosjekt fikserer organisasjonsstrukturen som tok til med den katolske kirkens innsats. ca 1980 - 98: Zapatistene i EZLN kommer til Chiapas, og viderefører den lange kampen - oppstått i samspill mellom indianerne og de utenforstående aktørene - i form av et væpnet opprør.

EZLN, idianerne og de andre aktørene diskutteres som sosiale bevegelser, og ses i sammenheng med med hovrdan slike tradisjonelt oppstår og fungerer.

Oppgaven slutter med at ejido Tabasco forlater Zapatistbevegelsen.

The thesis deals with the period from 1930 - 1998 in indigenous Chiapas, Mexico, and how the indigenous Tojolabales in the community of ejido Tabasco struggles for land and emancipation, working with outside agents such as the Catholic Church, the Mexican government, different leftist actors and, finally, the Zapatista movement.

The thesis discusses how the indigenous peoples of Chiapas work with the above mentioned outside agents, and how this work culminates in an armed rebellion in the mid 1990s.

The thesis deals with four main periods: ca 1930 - 40: The cardenista reforms, in which the indigenous get formal ownership og the land they have worked on big farms ("fincas"), and how they are included, partly, in the national project through these reforms. ca 1960 - 70: The indluence of the Catholic Church and liberation theology in ejido Tabasco and indigenous Chiapas. ca 1970 - 80: different outside agents - leftist activist - deepen the organizational structures imposed by the church in cooperation with the indigenous peoples. ca 1980 - 98: EZLN - the Zapatista movements - comes to Chiapas, and sees this process through with the culmination in an armed rebellion against the national government.

EZLN, the indigenous Tojolabales and the other actors are discussed as social movements, and seen in the context of emergence and functions of such movements.
