Rex Dei Gratia : makt, ideologi og tvetydighet i diskursen rundt Magnus Erlingssons kongedømme

Abstract

I min masteroppgave foretar jeg en studie av Magnus Erlingssons tronfølgelov, kroningsed og privilegiebrev, tre tekster som har vært sterkt debattert innen Norsk historiografi. I de siste 45 årene har de fleste historikere vært enige om at tekstene viser en pro-kirkelig ideologi, noe kongen godtok på grunn av maktpolitiske forhold. I oppgaven søker jeg å trekke frem nye aspekter, samt argumenter fra tidligere forskning, som viser at tekstene er mer tvetydige, og at kongsmakten fremstår med en sterkere rolle i dem, enn det som har vært vanlig å hevde.

My master thesis is a study of three texts connected to the reign of king Magnus Erlingsson: the law of succession, Magnus' coronation oath and a document of privileges to the archbishopric of Nidaros. These three texts have been heavily debated in Norwegian historiography, and during the last 45 years, the majority of historians have agreed that the texts show a pro-church ideology, which the king agreed upon due to political circumstances. In my thesis I have drawn the attention to new aspects of the texts, as well as arguments from earlier research, which show that the texts are more ambiguous, and that in them the king appears as more powerful, than historians have claimed in the past.
