The thesis undertakes a close study of UN official sources on the political transition in Iraq, and raises the question: How did the UN work in Iraq? And further, why did they work as they did? The political transition process in Iraq after the invasion by the US-led Coalition in March 2003, can be seen in three phases 1) The period of 2003 , when the Iraqi Governing Council was established. 2) 2004, with the Interim Government and the Transitional Administrative Law 3)The January 2005 elections, the constitutional process and the December 15 elections, which the UN considered the first genuinely democratic elections. The UN gradually got more involved as the process became democratic, but their was still the major problem of the occupation, and the war on the ground, which raised the question of when and how Iraq could experience a peaceful society, a question which was still unsolved as of May 2006.nor
