A question of loyalty : The French Communist Party, 1976-81

Abstract

Oppgaven er en studie av det franske kommunistpartiet - PCF - og dets internasjonale relasjoner og lojaliteter i årene 1976 til 1981, og søker å gi et svar på hvorfor PCF ga sin støtte til Sovjetunionens invasjon av Afghanistan i 1979. Oppgaven fokuserer på partiets søken etter ideologisk uavhengighet fra sitt sovjetske søsterparti, som PCF sto svært nær. I denne perioden ble partiet også influert av Eurokommunismen, og PCF ble inspirert av denne bevegelsens ønske om mer reelt demokrati innad i den kommunistiske bevegelsen. I 1979 oppnådde PCF sitt ønske om Sovjetunionens kommunistpartis - SUKP - anerkjennelse av ideologisk divergens mellom kommunistpartier. Like etter gikk Sovjetunionen inn i Afghanistan, og PCF ga invasjonen sin støtte. Dette fikk store konsekvenser for partiet, og oppgaven søker forklaringen på denne avgjørelsen, da også ved å se på PCF's handlinger i månedene som fulgte.

The thesis is a study of the French Communist Party - the PCF - and its international relations and loyalties in the years 1976 to 1981. It seeks to answer why the PCF gave its support to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. The thesis focuses on the party's quest for ideological independence from its close ally, the Soviet Communist Party - the CPSU. In this period, the party was also greatly influenced by Eurocommunism, a project seeking more democracy within the international movement. In 1979, the PCF achieved its goal of persuading the CPSU to recognize ideological divergence between two communist parties. Shortly after, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, and the PCF supported it. This had great consequences for the party, and this thesis seeks the explanation for this decision, also in analyzing the PCF's action in the months following the invasion.
