Norskamerikanere i Seattle, 1889 til 1930

Abstract

Oppgaven omhandler først og fremst hvordan og hva som bidro til nordmennenes utvikling og fremveksten av det norskamerikanske samfunnet i Seattle fra 1889 til 1930. I den forbindelse vil denne studien først se på økonomien i Seattle på denne tiden, og hvilke arbeidsmarked nordmennene kom inn i. Videre vil oppgaven studere hvilke typer arbeid som var typiske for nordmenn, og se om det var noen forbindelse mellom hvor de kom fra, hva de gjorde i Norge og jobber de tok i Seattle. Det vil også bli undersøkt om norskamerikanerne hadde noen sosioøkonomisk vekst i byen, i perioden 1889 til 1930. For å forstå nordmenns liv i Seattle vil det bli gitt en gjennomgang av ulike foreninger, tradisjoner og kirkesamfunn. Oppgaven vil studere det norskamerikanske samfunnet innad, samt se dette i kontekst av det amerikanske storsamfunnet, og studere nordmenns amerikaniserings- eller assimilasjonsprosess til det amerikanske samfunnet i Seattle. Oppgaven vil bli sett gjennom et makro perspektiv fra ulik litteratur, kilder og statistikk, samt mikro perspektiv, gjennom brev og intervjuer.

The thesis discusses primarily how and what contributed to the Norwegians’ development and the growth of the Norwegian-American community in Seattle from 1889 to 1930. In this relation this study will first look at the economy in Seattle during this time, and the labor market the Norwegians got into. Furthermore the thesis will study the types of work that was typical for Norwegians, and see if there was any connection between where they came from, what they did in Norway and the work they took in Seattle. It will also be examined whether Norwegian-Americans had any socioeconomic growth in the city, in the period 1889 to 1930. To understand the Norwegians’ life in Seattle there will be given a review of the different organizations, traditions and church societies. The thesis will study the Norwegian-American community within, and see this in context of the American overall society, and study Norwegians Americanization or assimilation process to the American society in Seattle. The thesis will be seen through a macro perspective from different literature, sources and statistics, and a micro perspective, through letters and interviews.
