| nor |
dc.description.abstract | On the 25th of April 1974 the inhabitants of Portugal witnessed the end of a 40 year long dictatorship. The end of the regime was marked by a military coup executed by lower rank officers who called themselves Movimento das Forcas Armadas, or MFA. The Coup, and the revolution that followed is more commonly known as the Revolution of the Carnations.
In the wake of the coup there was a collapse of the fascist institutions of the Estado Novo (1933-1974) which led to a society lacking real institutional, centralized and ideological power. In turn this created a situation where grassroots activists could organize more freely. This increase of grassroots activity was apparent amongst rural and industrial workers, but also in urban areas around the major cities of Portugal (Lisbon and Porto). The neighborhood movement sought to change housing conditions in the cities. This is the focal point of this project and we follow the movement from the 25th of April 1974 to the 25th of November 1975. This project draws on current theory and ideal type treats of social, collective, and popular movements to answer weather the above mentioned neighborhood movement can indeed be characterized as a single and unitary movement. | eng |
