Pest og Plage ? : Athen 431 - 421 f.Kr.

Abstract

I følge litteraturen døde rundt en tredjedel av befolkningen i Attika av pest, og Athen tapte Peloponneskrigen. Oppgaven vurderer påstanden fra ulike innfallsvinkler som risikofaktorer for sykdom, medisinske opplysninger og konsekvenser pesten fikk for demografi, samfunn og krigføring.<br> Kilder og metode: Thukydides og annen kunnskap om datidens samfunn, sykdom og krig.<br> Konklusjon: Pesten representerte datidens sykdomspanorama påvirket av overbefolkning, og de dominerende sykdommer var tyfoidfeber og epidemisk flekktyfus. According to the literature around one third of the population of Attica died from the plague, and Athens lost the Peloponnesian war. To discuss the plague I examined the risk factors for diseases in the society combined with symptoms and signs of infection and poisoning and the consequences of the plague for the demography, society and warfare.<br> The source is Thukydides, but I also used other written sources from this period together with knowledge based upon archeology and paleo-microbiology.<br> Conclusion: The plague represents the existing diseases at that time with typhoid fever and typhus as the dominating diseases due to an overcrowded city which resulted in inadequate hygienic conditions. The plague had a modest if any influence on the warfare and was not the reason for Athens later defeat.<br> An English translation "Plague and Consequences. Athens 431 – 421 BC" is attached.
