Snorre Strulason og rikssamlingsmyten knytt til Harald Hårfagre : ei vurdering av Snorre som diktar eller vidareformidlar med utgangspunkt i ei analyse av mytiske skildringar i framstillinga av rikssamlaren Harald Hårfagre

Abstract

Denne masteroppgåva i historie er ei analyse av dei mytiske skildringane i Snorres forteljing om rikssamlinga, samt eit forsøk på å vurdere om Snorre var unik eller ikkje i dette ved å samanlikne han med andre norrøne kjelder som fortel om same tidsperiode. For å sette dette temaet på spissen har problemstillinga vore om Snorre arbeida mest som ein redaktør eller diktar i sitt arbeide med rikssamlingsmyten. Oppgåva tek utgangspunkt i, og tek for seg enkelte forteljingar/skildringar frå sogene om Halvdan Svarte og Harald Hårfagre, i tillegg til at den prøver å vurdere Haralds totale posisjon i Heimskringla, for så å samanlikne desse med skildringane frå hovudsakleg fire eldre kjelder (dvs eldre enn Heimskringla): Den eldste Noregs-historia (Historia Norvegiæ), Historien om de gamle norske kongene, Ågrip og Fagerskinna. Harald blir også samanlikna med Olav den heilage. Konklusjonen har vore at Snorre arbeida mest som ein redaktør, men at han likevel skil seg frå sine forgjengarar i forhold til omfang og fokus på Harald Hårfagre.

This paper is an analysis of the mythical stories in Snorris history of the gathering of Norway, and an attempt to judge if Snorri was unique or not in this by comparing him to other Norse sources that tell of the same time period. To push this to extremes the question has been whether Snorri worked mainly as an editor or poet/author in his work with the myth about the gathering of Norway. The basis for the paper is analysis’s of some episodes/stories from the sagas of Halvdan the black and Harald Finehair, in addition to that the paper makes an attempt to judge Haralds total position in “Heimskringla”, to then compare these observations to the stories from mainly four sources that are older than Snorris work: “Historia Norvegiæ”, “The story of the old Norwegian kings”, “Ågrip” and “Fagrskinna”. Harald will also be compared with the saint Olav. The conclusion has been that Snorri mainly worked as an editor, but that he differs from his predecessors when it comes to volume and his special focus on Harald Finehair.
